At a time of virulent anti-immigrant fervor, Yezierska makes a case for allowing Jews to continue coming into the country by pointing to the particular ways that Jews, with their unique values and perspectives, can help Americans to live up to American ideals of equality and justice.3 In building the case for a Jewish contribution to America, Yezierska, in her short story "The Lost 'Beautifulness'" (1920) and the novel Salome of the Tenements, explores whether Jewish desire and passion are socially-engaged and politically-relevant impulses or merely hedonistic retreats into the self.
