  • This work purposes to determine the capability of activated carbon derived from oil palm shell coated by magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) (ACC-M) to adsorb Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions in solution. The activated carbon (ACC) from oil palm shells was successfully coated using Fe 3 O 4 magnetite particle (ACC-M). The Fe 3 O 4 can function to enhance the adsorbent properties of activated carbon. The ACC-M was investigated by Scanning Electron Microscope–Energy-Dispersive X-ray (SEM–EDX), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). SEM–EDX imaging revealed that the morphology of ACC-M has an agglomerate particle with the composition of C, O, and Fe elements. XRD analysis shows the diffraction peak of ACC-M at the 2θ angles of 31.3°, 36.5°, 44.6°, 54.3°, and 58.9°, respectively. Spectra of FTIR show the vibrations of ACC-M at the 3448 cm −1 , 1111 cm −1 , 1627 cm −1 , and 601 cm −1 wavenumbers, respectively. Then, BET analysis shows the total pore volume value, BJH pore volume, BJH surface area, and pore average increase with the existence of magnetite coating on the surface of the carbon. The result shows that 0.4 g of ACC-M for Cu(II) and 0.5 g for Ni(II), contact time of 60 min, and pH of 5, the adsorbent can adsorb Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions with adsorption percentage of 99.60% and 99.11%. Thus, ACC-M adsorbent is a highly effective adsorbent in absorbing Cu(II) and Ni(II) metal ions in aqueous solution.
