  • This paper treats the Straussian, Marxian and Cambridge schools in their interaction, with John Locke's Two Treatises as a case study. Over the past halfcentury the philosophical quarrel between these schools has been covered-up by partisan concerns. I endeavour to provide a sympathetic internal reconstruction of each school's method from an avowedly and strenuously neutral position, abstracting entirely from the political concerns of the founders of each school. The narrowly methodological starting point aims to provide a pathway back to genuine philosophical discourse. I strive to be maximally sympathetic to each school while also giving reconstructions of each to maximize their clarity, convincingness, strength and applicability, while sharpening their interaction and quarrel. The paper also provides a centralized and concise conspectus of the relevant period of scholarly development within each school, with an extensive bibliography.
