Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • This dissertation explores the prominent use of wood in the interior of the Eşrefoğlu Mosque in Beyşehir (696-99/1296-99), setting it in the context of political and architectural patronage in medieval Anatolia by documenting and analyzing the structural and ornamental elements of the building. The research was conducted using advanced digital technologies such as 3D modeling and digital tracings. By endeavoring to uncover the production processes and mechanisms involved in the development and transmission of architectural forms and techniques, it aims to foster a better understanding of artistic and architectural transformations in Anatolia during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. By examining the relationship between the Eşrefoğlu Mosque and a group of earlier wooden mosques that were built in the cities of Konya, Afyon, and Sivrihisar, the dissertation aims to open up new dimensions in the construction and history of applied muqarnas and the role of painting in architecture. It offers insights into previously neglected aspects of artistic process and technique that may have implications for understanding the pragmatics of construction in other parts of the medieval Islamic world.
