  • [...]many students come to graduate studies without having ever encountered or read an Indigenous text. In other words, in order to teach students to think critically, to engage respectfully, and to engage meaningfully in their own teaching and learning, I also need to present myself as a learner. 2.COURSE CREATION The title of the first course (named after the program), Récits et médiás autochtones, elicited early questions and even criticism4: why was the program, and the course, not called littératures autochtones? [...]from a more contemporary perspective, beyond the novel, the play, and the poem, how do generic alternatives such as comic books, graphic novels, science fiction, speculative fantasy, zombie/vampire fiction, slam poetry, erotica, and film scripts participate in dislodging the existing critical scholarship from its comfort zones? [...]these texts, with these voices, is paramount: first, these women offer their stories as 'theory' to the lived, real experiences of Métis and First Nations (Innu, in particular) peoples during some of the most racist and assimilationist years of Canadian and Québécois history. Both, however, also present their respective communities as home, in all its complexities; perhaps fraught with dreariness and poverty, they are spaces of congeniality and proximity; and while they attest to colonial violence and assimilation, they are also spaces of fierce endurance and love.
