  • Soil salinisation negatively affects growth and yield of potato crop especially under arid and semiarid climate. Salt tolerance induction by salicylic acid (SA) depends on its concentration, crop, and its growth stage. An experiment was, therefore, conducted to optimise SA concentration that induced maximum salt tolerance in two potato cultivars, N-Y LARA (tolerant) and 720-110 NARC (sensitive). Different SA concentrations (control, 0.25, 0.50 ck, 0.75, 1.00, and 1.25 mM) were applied to their foliage after 7 days of salt stress (50 mM) induction. 0.5–0.89 mM SA induced maximum salt tolerance compared to the other treatments and this was confirmed through increased antioxidant activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD); osmoregulation; proline and total phenolic contents (TPC); water relations; gaseous exchange; morphological parameters; tuber yield; and potassium (K + ) contents along with reduction in sodium (Na + ) contents. However, high SA concentration (1–1.25 mM) negatively affected studied attributes. Conclusively, low SA concentration (0.5–0.89 mM) could be considered a short-term and economical method to induce salt tolerance under moderate stress for sustainable potato crop production. Nevertheless, more research is required on the SA mechanism of salt tolerance induction under saline field environment to explore marginal land and water for potato crop production.
