  • Salpi is an abandoned settlement in Northern Puglia, known in written sources from the 11th century C.E., and abandoned around the 15th-16th century C.E. The city stands on the Monte di Salpi, an artificial relief created on the western portion of the site of the Roman municipium of Salapia, abandoned in the Early Medieval period. The two sites are situated on the shores of the Salpi Lake, used for salt production since ancient times. Since 2014, new research led by the University of Foggia and the McGill University (Montreal) has helped to understand the stratified site, while geophysical surveys have finally yielded an image of the two buried cities. This paper examines the topography and urban fabric of the medieval settlement. It integrates written sources, historical maps, excavation findings, and spatial analyses of the individual urban units that can be reconstructed, using the GIS system. The findings allow new considerations regarding the relationship with the Roman city of Salapia (which constituted, at least partly, a spatial reference for the medieval town), and regarding the topography and development of the medieval urban centre (an initial outline is given of its organisation and gradual expansion, also by means of probable allocations of plots for the newer districts), as well as regarding residential building work in relation to social and economic aspects.
