  • Gainesville FL is located in north-central Florida with a population of 141,000 (2020 census) and consists of more than 61.3 square miles (98.6 kilometers [km]). It is located near several large cities in the state (Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa), but has a unique small-town and college town feel, with a mix of small central business district, urban, suburban, and rural settings. The Traffic Signal and Traffic Management team at the City of Gainesville Department of Transportation (Gainesville DOT) started looking at modernizing and developing its connected and automated vehicle (CAV) infrastructure around 2015-2016. At the time, the city had approximately 85 miles (136.7 km) of fiber optic network, 200 traffic signals (about 85 percent of which were online), and nine signal technicians. As with many smaller cities, Gainesville has very limited resources that are particular to transportation technology, ITS, and CAV. Thankfully, through its nimble staff, proximity, partnership with a research university, and willingness to take on challenging opportunities, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in partnership with University of Florida (UF) embarked on several projects to jumpstart a living laboratory in this region.
