  • Since there is no universal turbulence model which is suitable for all kinds of problem in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), selecting a compatible one becomes a fundamental step to achieve an accurate simulation. Such is the case of computational models for investigating fluid-structure interaction in suspension bridge decks subjected to wind loads. This paper compares standard κ - ε , shear stress transport (SST) κ - ω , and large eddy simulation (LES) turbulence models applied in 2D numerical simulations of the Great Belt East bridge (Denmark) deck model. Aerodynamic parameters such as drag, lift, and moment coefficients and the Strouhal number were studied. To predict flutter critical velocity, an analysis of the flutter phenomena was performed. Steady analysis with the SST κ - ω model yielded acceptable parameter values when compared to benchmark results. However, aeroelastic analyses for critical flutter velocity indicated that the LES model was the most accurate in simulations with mesh movement. This suggests that mesh rearrangement after bridge deck oscillations has an effect over CFD simulation results, and therefore should be considered when selecting a turbulence model.
