Betz focuses on Janet Culbertson's art work. In her fifty-five years of professional art exhibits, Culbertson created a body of work that keeps pointing to a future that is tense: indeed, in fact it is now here. Nearly coinciding with the timing of her first solo exhibition in New York, Elegy to Nature in 1967, American news outlets suddenly were featuring photos of a river on fire. From this time, our society at large first began to care about industry's free market destruction of the environment. Drawing freely from these images of the burning river, Culbertson used this as a key incident and a site to recall how this event helped generate the political will to create governmental agencies and policies friendlier to preservation of wilderness and toxic cleanup. Her very recent oil on panel, World on Fire, has a small kangaroo leaping out of a raging fire.
