• This article introduces the special issue on "Aging and Culture." The various contributions to this special issue illustrate the many uses and applications of the concept of culture in the context of aging, but they also remind us that the use of the concept of culture needs to be well defined, and that cultural differences exist not only between but also within specific geographical entities. A look at the culture-specific phenomena and developmental pathways that occur over the life course shows how interconnected the different levels are; changes made on one level, e.g., through the introduction of specific policies and laws, can have a high impact on other levels and, importantly, on the subjective well-being of older people.
