  • The study on the evolution of water use structure is very important for water resources management. In this paper, the evolution of water use structure is defined by the matrix-based Renyi's alpha order entropy functional, and a method of detection of change-point is developed based on the Bernaola-Galvan algorithm (BG algorithm) and moving window technique. Furthermore, key driving factors are identified for different kinds of water use through the normalized information flow, which is used to explain the sudden change of water use structure. The new method is applied to analysis on abrupt change of water use structure in Qingyang, China. It is found that the structure of water use is basically stable before 2010 and becomes extremely unstable during the period of 2014–2018. The irrigation water consumption changed abruptly in 2005 and 2014. The industrial water consumption changed abruptly in 2005 and 2017, while the domestic water consumption changed abruptly in 2009 and 2012. The urban public water consumption varied abruptly in 2005 and 2011. The water consumption for forestry, animal husbandry and fishery changed abruptly in 2009 and 2013, while the eco-environmental water consumption changed abruptly in 2009 and 2017. Moreover, the reasons of abrupt change for different kinds of water consumption are analyzed and discussed, this will be useful for future water resources planning and management.
