Today, speakers' references to the blues of mood and music - monochromatic, one might say - like earlier historically short-sighted explanations of the origin of the word blue in these uses, can have little awareness of the complex linguistic DNA inherent in these expressions nor of the range of actors on this lexical stage, from Thomas Jefferson to Howlin' Wolf.
