• The Catholic Church can publicly recognize the constancy of virtue and holiness in the life of a holy person. The Church then makes a clear and infallible statement that a soul is in heaven via canonization. The question then that is proposed is whether the Church has the authority to perform the opposite process. Does the Catholic Church have the authority to publicly declare that a soul is in hell in a type of reverse canonization? Ultimately, I argue that it is not because the Church cannot (considering whether excommunication might provide a means for reverse canonization) and such a move would be contrary to the Church’s evangelical mission.
