Among the profound transformations that the histories of art and the anthropology of the image have undergone in recent decades, the one that can be considered as a work of "dessentialization" is undoubtedly not the least. . Thinking that images affect (and are affected by) the environments in which they are embedded has constituted, and still constitutes, a major theoretical horizon. It is not a question here of reducing the scope of images to one function, social or cultural, to the detriment of another function, aesthetic, but rather of admitting that an image always constitutes a relationship, or rather a series of reports. Infinitely multiple, these relationships notably articulate signifiers and signifieds, objects and gazes, even if they are fantasized, but also objects and places.
