Beschreibungen/Notizen
In the summer of 1831, Arthur Henry Hallam wrote and published his article 'On Some of the Characteristics of Modern Poetry, and on the Lyrical Poems of Alfred Tennyson'. As the title of this piece suggests, it is comprised of two parts: a broad survey of recent English verse, and a laudatory review of Poems, Chiefly Lyrical (1830). The article--which was begun around the 18th July, and completed by the 26th--was immediately dispatched to the publisher Edward Moxon, and it was printed in the August edition of his short-lived Englishman's Magazine. The editor of the 1943 edition of Hallam's Writings, T. H. Vail Motter, argues that his 'especial competence in Italian studies would have furnished the Victorians a valuable counterweight for the disproportionate reverence which the leadership of Coleridge and Carlyle bestowed upon things German'.
