  • Part of the problem with casting a group of texts as a tradition is that this seems to presume clear rules of inclusion, to pose a linear continuity, and to prescribe a potentially debilitating sense of indebtedness for contemporary readers. [...]beyond presenting this archive of three texts as an addition to what is typically recognized as Marxist feminist theoretical history, the argument that follows examines the category of the archive itself as a possible alternative to the concept of tradition and other comparably problematic concepts. [...]while my meta-theoretical exploration of the archive is elaborated through comparisons with competing concepts drawn from both feminist theory and political theory, neither these nor the argument about the archive as an alternative formulation are limited in their relevance to readers of feminist political theory. There is nothing objective about the archival process. [...]unlike a canon, to assert that a group of texts forms an archive is to presume nothing about the pedigree of those texts or the standing of the collection they constitute.
