This essay argues that the movie Moonlight (2016) offers an enlightening opportunity to explore contrasts between film noir and melodrama, in particular how these two genres engage us differently with regard to emotions, morality, and race. The essay first lays out crucial differences between these two genres, what implications their differences can have far our emotional, affective, and cognitive reactions, and what they mean in terms of our ethical engagement with film, especially regarding race. The analysis reveals salient contrasts between film noir and melodrama, as well as what sorts of implications these contrasts have regarding our ethical responses and their possible transformation concerning the perceived race or sexuality of characters in film, especially in terms of the roles played by disgust, black masculinity, and being gay. The method used is cognitive film theory combined with analytic philosophy of film.
