  • •The explosion-bonded titanium/steel bimetallic plate is butt welded by Cu-V-Ag filler.•The weld quality is affected by the V contents.•The regions rich in Fe-Ti and Cu-Ti compounds present higher cracking sensitivity. Cu-base fillers with different V ratios were designed for the butt joining of explosion-welded titanium/steel bimetallic plate. The Cu-V-Ag weld metals are all consisted of Cu solid solution and Fe-Ti intermetallics. The lower V content (∼5 wt%) results in the formation of extensive Cu-Ti compounds at Cu5V10Ag/ERTi-1 interface. Brittle σ-FeV intermetallics are formed at steel/Cu30V10Ag interface when the V content increases to ∼30 wt%. The regions with considerable amount of FeTi, Cu4Ti, CuTi2 compounds present relatively higher cracking sensitivity. The resultant weld metals shows significantly different hardness distribution and low bending toughness. The strategies for improving the overall mechanical properties in the future are suggested.
