Since remote times of human existence water has always been the most important element, because of its ecological, cultural and aesthetic functions in landscape. Because it is essential to life, water works like an attractive force that drives man to fix and to develop his activities in its surroundings, to take advantage of it, in terms of human and animal supply, plants and agriculture irrigation, or simply as an element of aesthetic and/or artistic contemplation. With this study, we aim to demonstrate that water, because of its physical, aesthetic and symbolic properties, has been playing over time an important role in landscape construction, especially in Mediterranean cities, and that it can continue to have this role in the future, concurring for urban space and, therefore, landscape sustainability
