Beschreibungen/Notizen
The earliest manuscript witness to Augustine, Ep. 199 is a single fragment (or excerpt) from an eighth-century compendium of short, mostly patristic letters, treatises, sermons, and grammatical texts. The early twentieth-century editor of Augustine's letters, Alois Goldbacher, referred to this as 'Codex Vindobonensis 322'. Unfortunately, when he attempted to track down this fragment (as part of my doctoral research on the origins of the idea of evangelization in Latin Christianity), the author discovered that Goldbacher had given the wrong shelf mark. The real Vienna, Osterreichische NationalbibliothekMS 322, as described in the nineteenth-century catalogue, is an entirely unrelated fifteenth-century humanist manuscript.
