What makes the six authors exceptional, Mih ilescu posits, is their ability to transmute the long history of collective and individual suffering, inscribed into the Jewish experience in Eastern Europe, into a "critique of societal drawbacks and a strong sense of responsibility for the other's vulnerability," which they undertake in their new American milieu (xii). [...]in Bercovici's Crimes of Charity (1917) and Yezierska's Arrogant Beggar (1927) the institutionalized forms of charity, which targeted many new Jewish immigrants in the early twentieth century, are juxtaposed with the informal, community-oriented forms of giving that originate in Jewish ethics. Not only does Mih ilescu's book provide a painstaking analysis of the individual authors, but it also sheds light on an important aspect of Jewish history.
