  • Rather than approach Puritanism merely as an antecedent to or accomplice of some social and political force—the “religion-and-something else” formulation—he plunges into a deep study of Puritanism as a religious movement, full stop, and only then about some of the civic dimensions of their godly devotion. Hall begins with a fresh survey of central themes in Reformed theology from the days of Calvin, and returns to those themes throughout: denunciation of idolatry (one of Calvin’s tropes for the essence of sin itself and an idiom for false and especially Roman Catholic worship), deference to the authority of scripture over human traditions in church and state, regard for the church as an institution that proclaimed the divine Word, promotion of ecclesiastical discipline, social activism, and an overarching confidence in divine providence. [...]according to Puritans, many Catholic worship practices, such as veneration of saints, relics, or the host of the eucharist, or devotion to the Pope, were prohibited in the Bible and therefore to be censured by the civil magistrate as idolatrous. What of practices neither commanded nor prohibited in the Bible, such as using the formal liturgies in the Book of Common Prayer, reading set prayers during worship, or wearing clerical garments such as the surplice?
