• Since it is now universally held that Locke's Two Treatises was provoked by the Exclusion Crisis and not by the Glorious Revolution, we are almost bereft of evidence for his judgment upon the Revolution in its aftermath. In 1985 a short but important document was published, written in 1690, in which Locke directly addressed the question of allegiance. A divergent draft of that document has now been discovered in the Somerset Heritage Centre, which allows for a more exact assessment of Locke's position in relation to Whig 'Revolution principles' and to partisan tactics during the first year of the reign of William and Mary.
