  • It was well known that Ottavio Farnese (Valentano, 1524--Parma, 1586), the second duke of Parma and Piacenza, had an insatiable appetite for the arts and for all humanistic and scientific knowledge. He had even led his court to suspect that a life of politics was not his principal interest and that the administration of the duchy represented to him nothing but an obstacle to his studies. Farnese's passion for the arts was the driving force behind his energetic patronage, which only the state of the duchy's finances managed to halt occasionally. Attesting to his fervor are the many portrait busts of Ottavio known today, among which is the one in Carrara marble at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles CA. In this essay, Annibali seeks to demonstrate that this bust is in fact the work of sculptor Giovanni Battista della Porta (Porlezza, 1542--Rome, 1597).
