Reading this issue devoted to agricultural education illustrates the multiple historical and social realities associated with French agricultural education. Ironically in social history, it appeared at a time when the population of farmers was inexorably continuing to disappear from French society by recomposing itself in a mosaic of professional situations. According to the latest INSEE figures, in 2019 France only had around 400,000 farm managers, i.e. 1.5% of total employment (Chardon, Jauneau, Vidalenc, 2020). However, let us recall here that agricultural education was designed and built at the end of the 19th century to respond to a triple project. A political project first of all, because this unprecedented device aimed to promote a relatively homogeneous and numerically important social group in French society at the time. A professional project then, intended to promote changes in an agricultural sector called to modernize. Finally, a social project, to enable rural families to benefit from the overall education effort (Hervieu, Purseigle, 2013).
