Since the 1960s, students and general readers in the English-speaking world have had access to a handful of authoritative histories of modern Greece. The time period covered in this book saw the rapid disappearance of the peasantry and the transformation of Greece into an urban nation, but Beaton’s traditional narrative cannot give an adequate explanation for the nation’s social and demographic metamorphosis, the manner in which these massive changes played out, and their political ramifications. Yet there is scarcely a reference to the post-Civil War structures of power that made postwar Greece a quasi-democracy, scarcely an explanation for why the 1960s were so crisis-ridden or why Greece was the only postwar European country to shift to the far right, and scarcely any discussion of the nature of the student movement that led the resistance against the Junta.
