  • [...]noteworthy is the fluidity of the terminology used to designate the various genres of popular music, the same words meaning different things to different people. Since the essays embrace such a wide variety of topics, it is best to point out important general trends. Rock and roll was followed by hip-hop, punk, rap, and other novelties that were assimilated with greater or lesser difficulty into French cultural life. Following upon the traditions of variété, music-hall, and café-concert, the more modern chanson includes: (1) the spare style of a single voice paired with a single instrument, (2) more sophisticated orchestrations made possible in a recording studio, (3) a more serious type of singing characterized by melodic sentimentality (Aznavour, Mireille Mathieu) and a nostalgic celebration of Paris, (4) a style based on jazz rhythms, (5) chanson néo-réaliste, lamenting the darker side of human life among the socially underprivileged.
