  • In recent years, linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) have emerged as a powerful tool for solving control problems that appear difficult if not impossible to solve in an analytic fashion. In this dissertation we extend the applicability of LMIs by finding new problems that can be solved using LMI techniques, formulate them into compact and solvable LMIs, provide illustrative examples that can be solved numerically using the available software, and show that the LMI methods provide efficient solutions which sometimes are advantageous over other approaches and sometimes the only known solution. The focus of this research is mainly control and estimation of continuous and discrete-time systems. First, we discuss LMI solutions to regional pole placement problems in continuous and discrete-time linear systems, for both controller and observer design. Second we address the important problem of resilience or non-fragility which is stability maintenance when the controllers or observers are erroneously implemented due possibly to roundoff errors in digital implementation, actuator errors, etc. A linear matrix inequality approach is presented that guarantees stability in the implementation based on the knowledge of an upper bound on the implementation error. Third, a reduced-order compensator that uses an LMI based observer for suppression of process and measurement disturbances is presented. Fourth we treat the minimization of the effects of unmeasurable disturbances on systems with either multiple state delays or input delays or a combination of both state and input delays. Fifth, we deal with state estimation using Tau's observer for nonlinear plants having nonlinear measurement equations based on an LMI approach.
