• The film is subtitled throughout, but noise and its absence are at the heart of Sound of Metal: the raucous thudding and screaming of the punk metal band; the destabilising silence of hearing loss; and the tinnitus and white noise resulting, in Ruben's case, from a cochlear implant. In the safe house, which has a discreet Christian ethos, Ruben's ex-Vietnam vet mentor Joe (Paul Raci) offers a steadfast and clear direction: towards a Deaf identity which revolves around sign language and the new community it offers. The cost of the cochlear implants and the lack of counselling as to what benefit they might offer are highlighted in the film, but the context of the US health system means these issues may not translate to other settings where such services are available to people without the means to pay for them.
