•Both tensile and compressive stress enhanced the nucleation rate of precipitates in an Al-Zn-Mg alloy.•The tensile stress will dramatically decelerate the coarsening of precipitates, and delay the peak-aging procedure.•The tensile stress tends to accelerate the diffusion of atoms, while the compressive decreases the diffusion coefficient.

The precipitation kinetics in an Al-Zn-Mg alloy was significantly altered when applying tensile or compressive external stress during the second stage of artificial aging. The number density of precipitates in peak aging condition of tensile/compressive stress-aging is higher than that in traditional aging condition, resulting in higher peak hardness. Moreover, the tensile stress will dramatically decelerate the coarsening of precipitates during the artificial aging, so that the peak-aging and the over-aging procedure were delayed. However, although the applied compressive tends to accelerate the diffusion of atoms, the over-aging procedure was slightly slowed down due to the powerfully competitive growth among high-density precipitates.
