Gray demonstrates how the newspaper gave young African Americans an opportunity to contribute events that would be featured in the paper's pages, and to symbolically become members of the Defender Junior's Billiken Club through both their reading of the column and writing for it. Chapter 3's juxtaposition of the compromises that young women reporters made in following the lead of male news magnates with an examination of the ultimately stereotypical gender roles recommended for girls in Baum's Aunt Jane's Nieces series shows this fact particularly well. Like these preceding theories of agency, Gray's "artifice" offers less an absolute statement about how children can gain power than a strategy by which they might gain power—a way into the world around them that, under the right conditions, affords them an opportunity to transform aspects of that world.
