In this article, I analyze three state funerals held from 1974 to 1977 for victims of West German left-wing terrorism, which I interpret as a symbolic expression of statehood. I argue that the governing center-left parties in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) strategically used state funerals as a symbolic counterbalance to rising political pressure in times of ongoing terrorist violence. These funerals not only reshaped the way the West German state was symbolically expressed, but also played an active role in the rise of a more conservative vision of statehood and democracy at the end of the 1970s.
