This treatise introduces contemporary French composer Olivier Kaspar (b. 1962) to a wider audience of performers and scholars. The document opens with a chapter reviewing his career as a violist, conductor, teacher, and composer. The next two chapters analyze two of his works for voice and piano: Terre des salamandres, Op. 7 (1990) on texts of Yves Bonnefoy and Trois poèmes de Lionel Ray, Op. 26 (2002). The final chapter places Kaspar in the aesthetic context of later twentieth century France, noting that his compositional style is antithetical to the post-Webernian serialism that had been dominant in that country until recently. Stylistic trends observed in the two analyzed pieces are also explored, demonstrating how Kaspar’s nuanced treatment of contemporary French texts serves to illuminate their deeper meaning for the performers and audience alike. Appendices offer translations into English and phonetic transcriptions of the texts studied as well as a complete catalogue of Kaspar’s compositions to date.
