  • The purpose of this dissertation is to explore how perceptions of law enforcement officers, impacted by the police culture and officers’ subjective experiences at different law enforcement levels, can create barriers to seeking mental health services. Although some research has been done in this area over the past fifteen years, more research is needed to continue to explore this population and assist counselors in learning how to work with them. With suicide claiming more law enforcement officers’ lives over the past few years than all other line-of-duty deaths combined (Heyman et al., 2018), the growing concern of how stress impacts this population needs to be adequately addressed. In addition to identifying concerns of stress, past research has shown that law enforcement officers are often hesitant to seek mental health services, creating barriers for them in receiving the help they need (Fox et al., 2012; Violanti, Mnatsakanova, & Andrew, 2012). This study is significant, as it addresses how law enforcement officers’ attitudes and perceptions can often be the catalyst for encouraging and sustaining those barriers to mental health treatment, as well as exploring common barriers that emerge from various levels of law enforcement.
