• Starting with a reflection on the theory of subjectivity by Dieter Henrich, especially his idea of human life as a process of balancing contrary interests and views on life, the author aims at developing a concept of ethical pragmatism. It is centred on the dynamic relation between acceptance and exclusion. With reference to the discussion on securitization of social and political affairs, the concept of peace and security as promoted by Sabine Jaberg and others, the author proposes to modify the thinking “from opposition to complementarity”. In the concluding section, the idea of complementarity is illustrated by the example of the dogmatism in disputes on deterrence with nuclear weapons.
