• During the design phase of the interconnection of Cycladic islands the probability of the occurrence of overvoltages has been estimated. Considering the 150kV Lavrio - Syros interconnection overvoltages during operation and when short circuits occur have been calculated. In this paper representative results of studies are selectively presented. The overall installation consists mainly of submarine and underground cables. For the purpose of determination of SOA (Safe Operation Area), all system components are considered in the studies and suitably incorporated in the EMTP model of the network. Evaluation of results is based on the limits recommended in IEC 60071-1 regarding the phase-to-earth switching impulse voltages that strain the 150kV equipment.
