  • The book’s structure, considering individual writing lives as they parallel, contrast, and intersect with each other, offers a reminder of the positive value of inter-cultural exchange, something it seems especially necessary to mention as this review is being written during the time of the 2020 pandemic, when the world became both smaller—with people confined to their homes—and bigger—with people collaborating and singing from balconies and porches in locked-down streets around the globe. The international or “transnational” scope of the book registers a historical moment in the eighteenth century when women were reading and publishing in sufficient numbers to know of each other’s work, despite barriers in language or geography (ix, 2). Previously published as a book chapter, this polished analysis exemplifies the benefits of the discipline of comparative literature, as Cheek finds perceptive ways to link the dual nationality of both main characters.
