  • George Eliot was perpetually concerned about not doing enough for others whilst being continually inundated with requests for assistance. This resulted in her ambivalence, especially when it came to contributing money to various causes or individuals. In this essay, newly discovered letters, as well as a new focus on familiar ones, demonstrate the ways that Eliot was part of a community of women who helped each other emotionally, professionally and financially as much as they could. The letters she wrote to three correspondents—Bessie Rayner Parkes, also known as Mme Louis Belloc (1829-1925); the much younger and far less well connected, indeed from an impoverished background, Phoebe Sarah Hertha Marks (1854- 1923); and Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon (1827-1891)—will be used to illustrate her concerns. The reasons for the choice of these three are that the letters, largely unpublished, shed light on George Eliot as part of a female community and reveal her empathy for the plight of others, as well as the link between friendship and financial issues.
