  • While the 2017 edition felt too spread out, the 2019 WOW Festival held at Liberty Station returned to the communal nature of the original festival by utilizing a single large venue; and by selecting a unique and significant locale, the festival honored San Diego’s adventurous spirit and celebrated its rich cultural diversity. Sapien designed an event that served as a cultural and artistic hub for both audiences and artists alike, where artists could become audience members, seeing and supporting one another’s work, and where audiences could become active participants in the creative process. Audiences outfitted with headsets listened to cued audio tracks guiding them through a walking tour of a desert garden path, following Icarus and Amelia Earhart across an experiential collection of dreams, myth, poetry, dance, and performance. Intermittently throughout the experience, the roar of airplanes engines taking off overhead from the nearby international airport would reverberate through the body, over time becoming a part of the performances’ physicality and liveness, grounding the audience in the shared immersive experience.
