  • The Latin adjective lippus "bleary-eyed, having inflamed eyes: is understood to come from the Indo-European root "leip," reflected in a number of words having to do with fat, oil or other sticky substances. An examination of lippus and especially its derivatives in early Latin shows the core meaning to have been "watery" rather than sticky.
