  • We conducted continuous observation during the 2016 Hokkaido heavy rainfall and the 2017 snowmelt period in Lake Abashiri. We observed Salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity and three-dimensional flow velocity at 1 hour intervals using self-memorized observation instruments. From the result of heavy rainfall, it is clear that salt water remained in lake even if there was inflow twice of lake volume. In addition, it is confirmed that salinity was very low and DO decreased at the outlet. Salt-fresh boundary elevation was down since after heavy rainfall. As a result of examining salt water outflow, it is suggested that salt water was diluted about 50 times with fresh water which inflow during rainfall. Salinity was detected with low value due to dilution of salt water. DO decreased because hydrogen sulfide contained in the salt water was remained enough to consume DO. It is clear that there was correlation relationship between the total amount of the flood inflow and the value of the salt-fresh water boundary elevation change. We are able to estimate the amount of salt water outflow simply using the correlation relationship.
