• Eugene B. Jackson, at one time the Chief of the Division of Research Information at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, presented a speech entitled "Suitable Applications for Rapid Selection Devices" in 1951. His remarks seem to be rather perceptive when viewed from the distance of 40 years. In his speech, Jackson said that no machine aid or other device is inherently good or bad, economical or uneconomical, convenient or inconvenient. He stated that those really interested in speed need to turn to electronic machines. Jackson expressed the hope that some kind of computing machine could be tied into the library business so that more information could be secured from the machine than was put into it.
