  • Many business executives have been reluctant to use organization theory to help solve their companies' problems. Why? They point out that behavioral science techniques have not significantly increased productivity or helped businesses deal with fundamental cultural changes as they have occurred. The author concedes these points but argues that the fault does not lie with organization theory so much as with organization theorists. The defect in behavioral theory, the author suggests, may lie in the failure of theorists to utilize the concept of "key leadership" derived from classical theory. The article shows how to pinpoint the "key leaders" in an organization and discusses what attributes key leaders in stable versus growth organizations should have. It affirms that key leadership is the crucial factor in giving or changing the direction of an organization
