  • When Pres Hosni Mubarak announced in Feb 2005 that Egypt would be holding direct democratic presidential elections for the first time in its history, US Pres George W. Bush was quick to welcome the news as a positive step toward the realization of democracy in the Middle East. However, this past February Mubarak announced the cancellation of local elections slated for April, undoubtedly in an effort to preserve his tight grip on Egypt. The US needs to increase the pressure on Mubarak and demand that he brings transparency to Egypt's political culture. By loosening his grip and simultaneously encouraging civil and political participation that seeks to preserve rather than to abuse democracy, he can bring the promise of a better life to the millions of Egyptians who wish to escape the country's dire economic and social conditions. By helping Egypt through this critical period, the US can simultaneously bring about greater freedoms without waging war and can redeem its reputation among allies.
