  • Phil Powrie, Bruce Babington, Ann Davies and Chris Perriam, Carmen on Film: A Cultural History (Indiana University Press, 2007), 320pp. review by Richard Fawkes In 1915 the young film producer Jesse Lasky went to see Geraldine Farrar backstage at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, after a performance of Madame Butterfly, to try and sign her up for a film version of Carmen. Fryer uses Chaliapin's appearances in the 1915 Ivan the Terrible (and later in the sound version of Don Quixote) to examine the art of screen acting, while Hope Hampton is included because, although it is safe to say she was neither a great singer nor a great actress, she epitomised the Hollywood system, having careers in both the movies and, to a lesser extent, opera, both bought for her by her husband, a senior executive with Kodak. Since her husband applied pressure for her to receive good reviews, it is hard to know whether she could actually sing. Both chart fascinating waters, and are required reading for anyone interested in the subject, whether academics or just avid cinema-goers.
