It is not known who wrote the texts for Bach's chorale cantata cycle composed 1724-1725. It is likewise unknown if the librettos were written by a single aughor or by several. Closely liked to the question of authorship is the question of why Bach did not complete the cycle. Alfred Dürr has suggested the possibility that Bach's cycle could have originated in the context of a cyle of hymn sermons similar to those of Johann Schelle's. A study is presented that examines Leipzig pastor Johann Benedict Carpzov's 1690 cycle of hymn sermons, the source of Schelle's hymns.
