• The cloning of two new ROMK cDNAs--ROMK2b and ROMK3--that express functional potassium ion channels was examined, along with the intra- and extrarenal distribution of ROMK1, ROMK2, and ROMK3 mRNAs by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction using isoform-specific primers in the rat. Expression of the ROMK isoform with the shortest NH2-terminal region, ROMK2b, is widely distributed along the loop of Henle and distal nephron.
