  • William Lynn Watson captures one major shift in how work was perceived in his essay "`The facts which go to form this fiction': Elizabeth Phelps's The Silent Partner and the Massachusetts Bureau of Labor Statistics Reports." In the process, Schocket shows how multiple and varied the needs and interests of the American working classes were, based on Little Blue Book authors and subjects ranging from Margaret Sanger on birth control, Thomas Paine, Clarence Darrow, George Bernard Shaw, African-American poetry, William Durant on the history of philosophy, as well as works by canonical writers such as Shakespeare and Poe. In the final essay, "Writer on the Left: Class and Race in Ellison's Early Fiction," Raymond A. Mazurek shows how the reputation of Ralph Ellison was reshaped by both the author and his editor John F. Callahan in an attempt to minimize the impact of Ellison's association with the "cultural front" of the American working class. [...]working-- class movements other than communism are suppressed or downplayed.
