  • Large systems were initially developed by project organization. Later, matrix organization replaced project organization as a means of obtaining maximum use of scarce personnel resources. In order to find out more about the organizational structures used in the US aerospace industry, a survey was conducted. A lengthy written questionnaire was used for the survey, and approximately 35 companies responded. The results revealed that most software development is done with either a project organization or matrix organization. Project organizations consist of programmer and analyst teams with additional teams for testing, integration, and interfacing. The matrix organizational structure, which is the most popular, is used mainly in large manufacturing firms. Both types of organizations have an equal chance of delivering a product within time and cost constraints. Appendices.
